National Center for Scientific Research “Demokritos” (NCSR) is a self-governing research organisation, under the supervision of the Greek Government and is located in Athens, Greece. It is the  largest research organisation in Greece and is internally subdivided into 8 research institutes. The Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications (IIT) aims at playing a pivotal role in research and development (R&D), as well as in the transfer and exploitation of R&D results in relevant sectors of  the Greek and international industry and society. The Informatics Department of IIT conducts research and develops infrastructure to support content filtering and extraction, adaptive intelligent systems, multimedia analysis and processing for cultural heritage applications including processing and recognition of historical documents. NCSR will participate in tranScriptorium with the Computational Intelligence Laboratory (CIL). CIL has a strong involvement in the research field of Document Image Analysis and Recognition (DIAR) in the last 20 years with more than 120 journal and conference publications. Currently, CIL consists of more than 10 people working in the field of DIAR  (Researchers, Research Associates and PhD students) and is involved in a series of national and EU projects (IMPACT, CASAM, BOEMIE etc.). CIL participates in the program committee of several DIAR International Conferences and Workshops (e.g. ICDAR 2009, ICFHR 2010, ICDAR 2011, CBDAR 2011, AND 2011, HIP 2011) as well as on the Editorial Board of the IJDAR. CIL has also co-organized a series of DIAR contests (Handwriting Segmentation, Document Image Binarization, Writer Identification and Word Spotting contests) and is the co-organizers of the International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition that will be held in Greece in 2014.
