This mini-tutorial will guide you through the interactive transcription process that you will try on our demos.

Note that this is a work in progress intended to demonstrate the basic functionality of UPV's interactive HTR engines at tS.

Choosing a Demo

Choosing Collection

Once you arrive to the collections view, you must choose one of the available demos by clicking either on a thumbnail or their acompanying link.

Choosing Chapter

The chapters view lists all of the available chapters for the collection you have chosen before. Just click on the chapter link you wish to transcribe.

Choosing Page

The pages view lists all of the available pages for the chapter you have chosen. Just click on the page thumbnail you wish to transcribe.

UI Layout Description

The main screen is the one devoted to the transcription itself, also known as editing view. The layout is pretty simple. At the left you have the a full-sized page. At the right you have a dashboard (not implemented yet), intended to display some basic stats in the near future.

Loading an Automatic Transcription

You will see a number of patches on the full-sized image. By clicking on one of these patches, a floating editor will appear. The application will connect to an HTR engine. As a result, an automatic transcription of the current image patch will be shown.


There are a number of keyboard shortcuts available aimed at making the most of each demo capabilities.

Image Manipulation

When this shortcut is executed over the image, you can zoom in/out the image. A green border indicates that the image is zoomed in.
When this shortcut is executed over the image, you can move the image around.
Double Click
When this shortcut is executed over the image, the image is reset, i.e., it goes back to the initial position, scale, and size.
Request a transcription of the current image patch. A text editor will appear.
Moves focus to the next image patch.
Shift + Tab
Moves focus to the previous image patch.

HTR Interaction

On the text editor you can write text as you would normally do. However, every single correction you perform will be taken into account by the HTR engine in order to improve their suggestions. In addition, you can perform the following actions over the text being edited.

Move caret to next word.
Shift + Tab
Move caret to previous word.
Ctrl + G
Display groundtruth information, if available.
Ctrl + Enter
Validate transcription.
Ctrl + Z
Undo last edition state, if any.
Ctrl + Y or Ctrl + Shift + Z
Redo last edition state, if any.
Ctrl + Up or Forward MouseWheel or Ctrl + Click
Reject current suggestion. A new suggestion will be presented, otherwise the border of the editor box becomes red for a very brief amount of time.
Ctrl + Down or Backward MouseWheel
Load previous suggestion, if any.
Ctrl + I
Zooms in the page while centering the image patches.
Ctrl + J
Resets zoom level.
Ctrl + K
Toggles the visualization of image patches.
